New York Asbestos Exposure Can Lead to Serious Illness

One of the most frightening facts about asbestos exposure is that symptoms of serious health effects take years to surface. That means that if you have been exposed to asbestos in New York, you may not be aware of the toll it has taken on your body for years to come.

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) defines asbestos as “a mineral fiber that has been used commonly in a variety of building construction materials for insulation and as a fire-retardant.” Previously, asbestos was used heavily by the building and manufacturing industries. Due to the health risks associated with asbestos, the EPA and the Consumer Product Safety Commission have banned numerous asbestos products and manufacturers have agreed to limit use of this potentially harmful mineral fiber.

Experts have estimated that as many as 10 million people have been exposed to asbestos since the 1940s. Many people have acquired asbestos-related diseases from being exposed in the workplace, such as in a shipyard of factory. Also, asbestos exposure can occur during the removal of old asbestos products or during the demolition of old buildings.

According to the EPA, the most dangerous asbestos fibers are too small to be seen and when inhaled, can accumulate in the lungs. Long-term exposure to asbestos can lead to chest and abdominal cancers, as well as lung diseases. Asbestosis is a breathing disorder that has also been associated with asbestos exposure. It occurs when asbestos fibers are inhaled and cause scarring of the lung tissue and breathing difficulties. Symptoms of asbestosis take years to surface, but can worsen and may lead to disability or death.

A property owner can be held liable for exposing tenants and customers to asbestos.
