As a parent, one of your worst fears is that your child will be abused, whether physically or sexually. That is why it is important to recognize the signs of child abuse, so that you can protect your child from harm. Abusers, who may include priests, caregivers, teachers, coaches and family members, are often good at hiding the fact that they are taking advantage of a child. They violate the trust of children, as well as their families and should be held accountable for their horrendous actions.
The Child Welfare Information Gateway has created a list of warning signs to watch for when it comes to abuse among children. According to the agency’s website, the first step in helping an abused child is to understand the signs. Just because a child may exhibit one sign, does not necessarily mean that he or she is a child abuse victim. Parents should review the situation the child is in to determine if in fact he or she is being abused.
Signs of Physical Abuse
• Unexplained burns, broken bones, bites, bruises or black eyes
• Protests or cries around certain adults
• Mentions injury caused by an adult
Signs of Sexual Abuse
• Has trouble walking or sitting
• Refuses to participate in physical activities
• Has nightmares
• Starts wetting the bed
• Sudden change in appetite
• Possesses unusual sexual knowledge
• Runs away from home
• Mentions sexual abuse by an adult
Not only does abuse harm a child physically, it can also leave emotional scars that will last a lifetime. Many children who are victims of sexual abuse or physical abuse often experience social problems, psychological damage, depression, eating disorders and sexual problems. Abusers should be held accountable for the horrific crime they commit against children.
If you believe that your child may have been the victim of sexual abuse, molestation or physical abuse, contact the authorities immediately. You should also contact an experienced child abuse attorney who can help you go after the abuser.
